7 Reasons Why You Still Need a Dial-Up Connection
According to a report from the Office for National Statistics as of March 2008, 8.4% of internet users use a dial-up connection for internet access. So while broadband undeniably has its advantages, why do so many stick to dial-up? Here are some of the major reasons we have found from talking to our customers:
- It's cheaper.
You only need to pay for the time you spend online, if your internet use is pretty light then you'll save money. - You can access it anywhere.
Anywhere there is a phone line, you can get internet access. If you're visiting family and friends, if you're travelling and your hotel doesn't provide access, you can hook up your laptop and be online in seconds. - You can't get broadband.
Many people, including those in remote rural areas still don't have the choice of broadband, a cheap dial-up service is still their best option. - You already have all the equipment.
A lot of laptops came fitted with dial-up modems as standard. And for those who have been on the internet for years, your modem is probably still hanging around unused. - Your broadband connection just went down!
You're in the middle of writing an important email, or you're trying to get a phone number from a website, so what do you do? Your dial-up connection is a safety net when your broadband provider lets you down. - You're in the middle of changing providers.
Sometimes there's a bit of red tape to cut through that leaves you without an internet connection for a few days. You can use dial-up to plug the gap. - No subscription.
If you go on holiday or don't use the internet for an extended period, you're still paying for it with a subscription. Dial-up's pay-as-you-go model means you only pay for what you use.
We'd love to know why you use dial-up. If you can think of more reasons, contact us and let us know.
